IQ-3G. Background fill using echo and path pattern.

This video shows how to use echo and path pattern to create a background fill. This method eliminates all the jump stitches that go across a motif when you use pantograph pattern for a filler (if you don't split the rows). It works best for patterns with a fairly smooth outline. You need to choose the fill pattern with care, checking all around the motif to see how the fill turns corners because sometimes they become too distorted.
Try this and see how you like it.

This video was created over 2 years ago. Since that time we've had some new features added and I probably need to change a few things but this will give you the general idea. They are long and I'm a "talker" lol... just letting you nkow ahead of time. Sometimes I view these old videos and wonder why in the world I'm gabbing so much lol...

Part 1 of 3

This next section shows me coming to the end of the row and keeping my fingers crossed that it hits the border. Mine happens to work fine because it's a small quilt. Since this video was made we have the addition of the line pattern feature. If I had a quilt larger than 60" I would definitely now use the line pattern on the last repeat or two. To do this I would do the following steps...

Step 1.
Set the pattern up as I've shown in Video 1

Step 2.
Before I stitch across, I would split out the last two repeats of each row.

Step 3.
Save one of the split out portions (2 repeats) as a pattern.

Step 4.
Delete the two last repeats from all the rows in my quilt.

Step 5.
Stitch each row. Each row will end now 2 repeats short of the edge.

Step 6.
When each row has ended, I then go and add a line pattern. I bring up the repeat portion I just saved as my pattern. I make sure it's height is the same as the rest of the rows. I now am using my machine to mark where these repeats need to be placed and I can be certain the edge ends up on the border edge.

Calibrating IQ

If you suspect your IQ is not measuring correctly or you know it isn't, then you need to calibrate. It's a very simple process. If you get a message telling you to repeat the calibration, do it again. On one machine I had to do it three times before it was correct.
You should calibrate if you've changed your motors, drive wheels or sensor wheel 'o' rings.

Since the latest version of our software, we are seeing a few screens we had not seen in the previous versions. In the previous versions we set up our thresholds in the preferences area, prior to setting up any quilts or blocks. In this newer version we are forced to make this decision during our set-up. Many of us (myself included) never really needed to know what this all meant before we had the no sew and clipping blocks. I usually trained my customers on this briefly in the preferences area, but rarely was it ever changed. Now, we need to pay closer attention to these settings. Understanding them clearly is the key to successful stitch-outs.

In the example below I am referring to using them while setting up a pantograph.....

Dwell

Note - this is an earlier version of IQ. The dwell button is now under the image in the tool bar. It does the same thing but to permanently correct choppy patterns, use 'smooth pattern'.
With the latest version of IQ (7.12.11) dwell has more options. It is off by default. To activate the dwell points, you need to turn on dwell and choose whether you want dwell 1,2 or 3. Set to 3, IQ dwells the longest at points. If your machine is prone to backlash, set the dwell to 1 if you want sharp points.
I am using in the ABC pattern by Dave Hudson that comes with IQ in this video as a good demonstration of what dwell can do. The choppiness is caused by the digitizing. Most patterns are not like this but if you come across one that is choppy, you can make it stitch out more smoothly by using the dwell off feature. This option won't be used much but is a very useful tool if you have a choppy pattern and need to use it right now rather than wait for the digitizer to correct it.

Stitch In The Ditch With IQ

This is a video showing how to do stitch in the ditch with the Intelliquilter. I am no expert and was skeptical about doing SID before. But when I decided to enter a quilt for the MQS computerized category, I realized 100% of the quilt needed to be done using the Intelliquilter. No freehand was allowed so I had force myself to use the line pattern feature to do SID work.

To my surprise, I actually got quite proficient doing this. I urge all of you to at least try to do this. You might be like me and hang up your rulers for good.

Tips:

Set your IQ speed to .03/.03 and try to match the speed of your machine to this speed so you have the desired stitch length.
Try using quilters gloves to help manipulate your fabric as the IQ is stitching.
Use a very thin (50 - 70wt.) for all SID work. The stitches will not show up as much if you run onto the high part of the seam.

Changing Your Starts and Ends

This video shows how you can change the start/end point of a motif with the touch of a button.

I use one of Kathy Olson's patterns in this video as an example of how IQ can sometimes randomly select where the start/end point will be. The odd placement of the start/end point was not Kathy's choice, but rather a result of IQ converting a pattern originally digitized for another system. The pattern stitches out beautifully.

This is a very helpful tool to use for wavy borders. The Line Pattern Feature with the IntelliQuilter lets you set in repeats following the path of the border. This video demonstrates how to do that.

Update to this video: After using this feature for a while, I've discovered tips that help with this feature.

Tip:

With complicated borders (i.e., formal feathers and patterns that need to snug up and interlock to previous repeat), make up the border in a layout before you even start quilting the quilt. Then when you start to use the line pattern on your actual quilt, lay it over what you already have prepared. This helps to sort of have a road map underneath what you are working.

Drift Test File

To download this pattern, please place this .iqq file in your "quilts" file on your flash drive. This is a quilt file and not a pattern file. The IQ will load it and place it in the proper place. Run this test pattern/quilt on preview at 1.8/1.4 speeds. Before you run this, place a little pen mark on the fabric to mark the first stitch. Then let it run at the suggested speeds. It takes about 8 minutes. When it's finished, check and see where the machine is sitting. It should not be any further than about 1/16" - 1/8" of an inch off in any direction. It will be a teeny, tiny bit off, but that's normal. We're looking for 1/8" or less.
